MIRROR IMAGES - Reflections in Art and Medicine
Castel of Sasso Corbaro, Bellinzona
6 April – 25 August 2019
Everybody sees us directly, but we are only able to observe ourselves when mirrored, photographed, filmed or portrayed. Mirrors expand our sense of reality yet, when this occurs, we experience a moment of estrangement because we feel our body here, but it appears there, projected onto an external surface. Neuroscientists describe this moment as disembodiment because it corresponds to a cognitive process in which we trespass our physical boundaries.
For a blink of an eye our sense of location in space and outer limits of our body, physiologically defined as proprioception, lose their istinctness and begin to blur.
MIRROR IMAGES — Reflections in Art and Medicine showcases works of art, scientific experiments, medical instruments and
curiosities that use reflection both physically and metaphorically.
Artists and neuroscientists alike—each with the instruments of their
own discipline—focus on the gap between the subject and her reflection to raise the question: since every so often it is unclear
where our body ends and others begin, what does it actually mean to be oneself?
